Built at the cost of blood, sweat and tears, Africa’s railways still offer a range of opportunities to let the train take the strain.
South Africa sees rail travel at its most luxurious, with the Blue Train running routes between Cape Town and Pretoria, as well as up to the Kruger and across to Victoria Falls. For period restored glamour, choose Rovos Rail with its choice of safaris across South Africa, stopping at the most interesting sights and using minivans to visit places of interest.
Rail journeys can be simple overnight journeys transformed by fine cuisine and comfortable en-suite sleeping compartments, or longer journeys that really get to the heart of the country.
There are other rail routes you can try: the new service running from Dar es Salaam to the Selous or the gradually deteriorating ‘Lunatic Line’ that still tracks, somewhat unreliably, from Nairobi to Mombasa.
